Its acerbic textures can rub against a more traditional listener and at times its structure threatens to cave in completely and turn into a sludge-y mess billowing acrid smoke. But ACTIVE PRESENCE captures this special moment before the synths and percussion succumb to the murk, allowing listeners to see the beauty in a coagulating mess of pre-millennium nostalgia and hypnagogic melodies."

The album is inspired by 80s' coming-of-age films, Sci-Fi & action movies, Australian soap themes, Sega Master System games – the fiction that shaped my world as a kid and is still a part of me today.

Like my previous albums, I never felt such emotion™ is a collection of short scene-like bursts of energy. But this one adds a more emotional narrative among the chaos.

I try to give flawed, human characteristics to how the instruments behave and interact: playing out 'conversations' – reflecting how people interact in reality: speaking over each other, not always saying the right thing, moments of cringe, confidently speaking until someone new joins the conversation and you go mute. All these are represented in the way the instruments take stage or shy away, and in the melodies that sometimes don’t quite fit, then fall into place. This is part of the process to evoke emotion while engaging in a conscious self-reflective way. In contrast to the meticulously sequenced songs, I do one take on overdubbed instruments, like guitar, to capture this; just like in sitcoms, when an actor has to overdub lines in post-production, I use humourful overdubs of snippets of guitar/synth in places, kind of like breaking the fourth wall, to cause awareness of the process to emphasize the self-critique.
